This has been a stressful month for all of us, between the heat, the storms knocking down branches and even large trees, widespread complaints about our nation’s official birthday celebrations losing focus on the founding history, and whatever our own personal stressors might be.
However, it did start out on a good note for the Lackawanna Coalition. Last spring, we were invited to join in a project of our hometown, Millburn, which was assembling a 250th Birthday Mural to celebrate this important anniversary. Local nonprofit groups were given the opportunity to design and paint a few wooden “tiles” to be assembled into a large-scale patchwork by a professional artist. I brainstormed with our group, designed something within my limited artistic ability, picked up supplies, and did my best to say Happy 250th to our country. The final project was unveiled in midJune, on a lovely early-summer evening at the Bauer Center in Millburn’s Taylor Park. We’ll post some photos on our Web site, lackawannacoalition.org, and encourage you to stop by to see the creative work of our fellow nonproffit organizations, and reflect on the true beauty of this country: the ideals, however badly realized; the local communities in which we live; and the chance to keep improving, not catering to the billionaire class that seems to care only about maximizing their profit at the expense of the rest of us.
