“Take 3!”

Due to occasions when this tour was previously proposed after RUN conferences and rained out, we are trying again on Saturday, May 18, under the auspices of the Lackawanna Coalition. Members of RUN, the Coalition, and other similar groups are welcome to join us and learn more about where rail services in New Jersey and New York City connect with each other.

The tour will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Newark Penn Station. We will meet at the information booth in the main waiting room no later than that time.

The “regular”/“senior” fares for each portion of the trip are in parenthesis.

Itinerary

  • Arrive Newark Penn Station by 10:30, take time to purchase tickets, and meet at information booth.
  • Take 10:58 departure of Newark Light Rail to Broad Street Station (Arr. 11:07)($1.60/80¢)
  • Take Train #518 to Hoboken at 11:19, arriving 11:38 ($3.50/$1.60)
  • Optional ride to Newport (one stop) and back on HBLRT ($2.25/$1.10)
  • Take Train #1713 at 12:24 to Kingsland (arr. 12:41)($3.50/$1.60) Stop at Lyndhurst Pastry Shop.
  • Take Train #1714 at 1:00 to Secaucus (arr. 1:07), see station, and take train to NY Penn ($5.25/$2.45).
  • Arrive Penn Station about 1:35, where Joe Clift will lead a walking tour. He will then take us to Grand Central to see the original Grand Central Terminal and the new LIRR “Grand Central Madison”.
  • After that, participants will have a farewell meal and the event will end.

If there is a threat of rain, we might need to make changes in the tour, especially the part in NYC. We hope to walk between stations, and there are possibilities of seeing something else in the city, if participants wish to do so and if the weather permits.

Unless you are affiliated with NJ Transit, you will be required to pay your own fares. We have indicated the fares in connection with each segment, so our estimate of the total for fares will be $16.10 if you are not a senior or a rider with a disability, and $7.50 if you are. You can use the NJ Transit app to pay fares, or you can buy tickets for the rail segments at Newark Penn Station. We will be there by about 9:30 to assist you.

We request that you let us know in advance if you wish to take the tour, so we will have a count.

We look forward to seeing you on May 18 and showing you connectivity in N.J. and N.Y.C.
