Report from the Chair – January/February 2026

As we welcome 2026, we enter the nation’s 250th anniversary year, and for many of us it is way different than we ever expected.  The Coalition’s hometown of Millburn is honoring the nation’s birth with a mural made of wooden tiles painted by nonprofit groups in the municipality.  We were honored to be given a place in the project, and considered a few options for our representation: a sketch of Millburn Station?  Logo from the original railroad?  NJ Transit’s M&E logo?  In the end, we stuck to a celebratory image, with a border of a railroad track alongside our logo—our image not to be unveiled until live in the mural itself, currently planned to be displayed at the Millburn Public Library entrance.

We continue to meet at another library, Summit Free Public Library, while the Millburn town hall renovations proceed.  The library is in easy walking distance from the Summit train station, and the conference room, though a bit smaller than Millburn’s, has a large digital television for screen-sharing.  I have just purchased a small “webcam” so that I can actually use my computer and let our Zoom attendees see everyone in the room—we’ll test that out, along with a new HDMI adaptor, at our January meeting on the 26th, when Chairperson Emeritus David Peter Alan will discuss the outlook for passenger rail overall and new starts.  We hope to see you there!
