We have had the honor of having NJT Customer Advocate Franck Beaumin join our meetings as a guest to observe and take notes about issues we discuss. This month, we had a specific question: How does cross-honoring get started?
On one recent occasion, a Coalition member, informed by PATH that cross-honoring was in effect, asked an NJT conductor to accept a PATH ticket. The conductor refused, saying that there was no such notice on the NJ Transit Web site. The member had a notice from PATH, but was still refused.
We wondered how such decisions are made and communicated. Franck told us that there was indeed a strong process, and followed up with a report:
“The coordination with PATH occurs through the Rail operation center (dispatch). When a request is made and granted, that information is transmitted to crew members via text message alerts. . . . The Revenue Supervisors who receive the alerts as well, relate the message to the Ticket Agents so everybody is on the same page.
In addition, and as much as possible, supervisors meet with crew members on the platform to let them know what is going on. . . .
If, for some reason, the PATH pull the trigger very early and some crew members miss the information (service is spotty at New York Penn), they are welcome to check the NJ TRANSIT website or app. If this is not enough, they can also radio dispatch.”
