Report from the Chair (January 2025)

With the holiday season over, a new year begun, and Inauguration Day and Martin Luther King Day intersecting in a manner most ironic, it’s hard to predict what’s next for NJ Transit and its riders.  New president/CEO Kolluri is expected to hold the position only until the next governor’ election at the end of the year.  Thanks in large part to now-Senator Andy Kim’s lawsuit, this year’s will be the first election in memory without a “county line” (the history is complex!) and there is already a full field of candidates.

In our area, congestion pricing has started with a $9 fee for entering the New York City “central business district” below 60th Street—Dave Alan has covered the program for Railway Age, and gives his perspective in this issue.

As this issue goes to press, we have not yet confirmed a presenter for our January meeting, but we expect that Gregory Woods, head of light rail at NJ Transit, will be joining us for our March meeting.  Joshua Crandall of Clever Commute has been invited for February—after hearing from Andrew Kuziemko back in August, we should have some educated questions about the data that NJ Transit provides to the public and developers.
